Is there a departure tax in Costa Rica?

A departure tax is a fee charged by the government when leaving the country. It is called in Spanish "Impuesto de salida" and many tour operators include this within their ticket prices. In Costa Rica, as of 2019, the departure tax is US$ 29.00/person when you fly out of Costa Rica and US$ 7.00/person if you leave by car or bus. If you fly out, those companies include it in the airfare:

Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air France, Air Panama, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Grupo Avianca, British Airlines, Condor, Copa Airlines, Delta, Edelweiss, Iberia, Interjet, Jet Blue, KLM, Southwest, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, Volaris Mexico, Volaris Costa Rica

The departure tax can be paid before your flight at Daniel Oduber Airport (Liberia International / LIR), Juan Santamaria Airport (San Jose International / SJO) and Tobias Bolaño Airport (San Jose / SYQ). Always check with your Airline before your departure. Changes can occur without notice.
