Choosing your neighborhood based on your lifestyle when buying a property in Costa Rica

People buying property in the Tamarindo area to move down for a season will find this blog useful, whether you are purchasing your home as an investment, a lifestyle dream property, or both, choosing the right area is one of the most important decisions you will make. Obviously your lifestyle should determine where you buy property in Costa Rica. Ask yourself why you came to Costa Rica and what you intend to spend the most of your time doing. Is it to improve your health? Enjoy more time with your family? Better return on investment?  Finding more compatible neighbors? Driving less? Or all of the above?

Here are my opinions on the the best places to live according to your specific lifestyle and needs:

Tamarindo and Langosta

Tamarindo will be perfect for you if:

  • You are a very social person who likes to be around people
  • You like to be near shops, banks, pharmacies, schools and restaurants
  • You like to surf many different types of breaks
  • You are considering starting a new business based on community needs
  • You don't like to drive a lot

Properties in Tamarindo are popular to rent and sell more quickly than in other areas.

There several kinds of investments but to make a long story short you can find condos within walking distance to the beach from between $100,000 up to $1 million (when listed, these don't last long).  High end finished condos and houses from $440,000 to $2.8 million.  Our inventory changes frequently and the best deals sell very quickly so it pays to check our site frequently for new listings.

Flamingo and Potrero.

I personally recommend Playa Flamingo & Playa Potrero areas to people looking for a more relaxed lifestyle. There are several buying options for lots, condos and houses in all budget ranges and these areas are less populated. Aside from a less dense population, I have found that most people choose this area for the magnificent ocean views and special white sand beach.This area is also closer to internationally accredited schools should you desire to enroll your children. This is also a great area for those who prefer to drive less or work from home.

Like Tamarindo, there are condos and homes to fit all budgets, not to mention some amazing million dollar mansions located on either the two Flamingo ridges or on the surrounding hills.

Hacienda Pinilla and Reserva Conchal Gated Communities

If you are the kind of person that enjoys spending hours in beautiful private beach clubs, having access to first class infrastructure, first class construction, golf courses and name brand hotels on site, either of these communities may be just right for you.

Reserva Conchal (North of Tamarindo) is closer to schools. Hacienda Pinilla (South Of Tamarindo) is roughly 30-35 minutes from schools. In both resort properties there are oversized colonial style villas, condominiums, houses and lots. Reserva Conchal offers Ocean Views and Hacienda Pinilla´s internal communities are on flat areas.

Avellanas and Playa Negra

Being 30-35 minutes from Tamarindo makes these 2 beach towns special for people that are looking to get away from crowds. Avellanas and Playa Negra are primarily surfer towns and properties here tend to be bigger. Investors have to be careful with the water situation of the specific property but that´s why RE/MAX offers you agents with inside knowledge of these 2 areas. If you have kids you should take into account they would have to be driven to schools everyday. There are several different beaches you can go to everyday and many roads are not paved yet. However there are current projects to improve the water infrastructure and roads in the short term; that´s why buying in this area could be a very good medium term investment.

There are lots from $50,000 up to $300,000 and more, fewer condos are on offer and there are several houses in the $200,000.00 and up range.
